A Day in the Life of a Snowcat Skier

A typical day of Steamboat snowcat skiing usually starts early. You’ll meet your guides, get a safety briefing, and then load into the cozy snowcat. As the snowcat climbs, you’ll be amazed by the quiet beauty of the backcountry.

Once at the top, you’ll gear up, listen to your guide’s instructions, and then it’s go time! You’ll ski down, enjoying the fresh powder. At the bottom, the snowcat will be waiting to whisk you back up for another lap. You’ll often get many runs in a day, with a yummy lunch break in the middle, sometimes right in the snowcat or a cozy yurt. It’s a full day of non-stop skiing bliss!

• Early Season (December)

  When the snow starts piling up, usually in December, you can find great conditions. It’s exciting to be among the first to explore the fresh snowpack. Just remember that early season might mean fewer runs are open, or some areas might not have a super deep base yet.

• Mid-Season (January-February)

  This is often considered prime time for back-country skiing in Colorado. January and February usually bring the deepest, lightest powder. Storms roll in regularly, refreshing the snow. If you’re chasing that famous “Champagne Powder,” this is your window!

• Late Season (March-April)

  Don’t count out the late season! March often sees some of the biggest snowfalls of the year. While the snow might be a bit heavier, it can still be incredibly deep and fun. Sometimes you can even find “corn snow” in April, which is a special type of soft, slushy snow perfect for spring skiing.

Watching the Weather: Your Best Friend

Dress for Success: Layers, Layers, Layers!

The weather in the mountains can change fast, so dressing in layers is key. You’ll be active, but also riding in the snowcat, so you need to be able to add or remove clothing.

• Base Layers: Wicking material (like wool or synthetic, NOT cotton!) that keeps sweat away from your skin.
• Mid Layers: Fleece jackets or puffy vests for warmth.
• Outerwear: Waterproof and windproof jacket and pants (like GORE-TEX). These protect you from snow, wind, and cold.
• Accessories: Warm hat, helmet (usually required), goggles, thin gloves for touring/riding the cat, and warmer waterproof gloves for skiing. Don’t forget sunscreen and lip balm, even on cloudy days!

• Avalanche Beacon (Transceiver): This device sends out a signal and helps rescuers find someone buried in an avalanche.
• Shovel: Used to dig out someone buried in snow.
• Probe: A collapsible pole used to pinpoint the exact location of someone buried under the snow after their beacon has been located.
• Avalanche Airbag Pack (Optional but Recommended): Some skiers choose to wear these backpacks, which have a large airbag that inflates to help them stay on top of the snow during an avalanche.
