Your day with Steamboat Powdercats is carefully planned to give you the best and safest adventure possible. It’s truly an all-inclusive experience that makes your powder dreams come true.

• Morning Buzz: Meeting Up!

  Your day usually starts early at their base near Steamboat Springs. You’ll meet your friendly guides, get fitted for any safety gear you need (like avalanche beacons), and go over important safety instructions. These guides are experts and know the mountains like the back of their hand.

• The Ride Up: Into the Wild

  Then, it’s time to hop into the snowcat! The ride itself is part of the fun. You’ll wind your way up through snowy forests, getting incredible views as you leave the groomed trails far behind. The terrain you’ll be exploring is primarily in the Routt National Forest, often reaching into the North Park area near Walden, known for its vast, deep snowpacks.

• Powder Heaven: Skiing & Riding

  Once the cat drops you off, it’s time for the magic! You’ll spend the day making fresh tracks in incredible, deep powder. Your guides will pick the best lines based on snow conditions and your group’s skill level. They’ll show you where to go and keep everyone safe. You’ll usually get between 8-12 runs in a day, depending on the snow and your group’s pace.

• Lunch with a View: Fueling Up

  Mid-day, you’ll stop for a delicious, hot lunch right there in the backcountry. Imagine eating a tasty meal surrounded by snow-covered peaks – it’s an experience in itself! Hot drinks and snacks are also provided throughout the day to keep you energized.

They are experts in avalanche safety, first aid, and knowing exactly where to find the best snow while keeping everyone safe. They also provide all the necessary safety equipment.

Who Should Try Steamboat Powdercats?

While it’s a dream for many, Steamboat Powdercats is best suited for intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders. You should be comfortable on black diamond trails at a ski resort and able to handle varying snow conditions, including deep powder. If you love fresh snow and adventure, and you’re ready to push your skills, this is definitely for you!

Winter Wonderland (December – April)

This is prime time for your Steamboat Powdercats experience!

• December & January: Early Season & Deep Cold

  Early winter can bring fantastic storms, setting up a great base for the season. January often sees some of the coldest temperatures and lightest, fluffiest powder. It’s a magical time if you love truly deep snow.

• February & March: Peak Powder & Big Storms

  These months are often considered the best for powder skiing. Storms are frequent, and the snowpack is at its deepest. If your main goal is epic powder, aim for this window.

• April: Spring Skiing & Longer Days

  As spring arrives, the days get longer, and the sun feels warmer. You can still find incredible powder, especially in the mornings, followed by “corn snow” later in the day, which is super fun to ski. It’s also often less crowded.

Winter Events & Fun:

• Steamboat Winter Carnival (February): A unique, historic event with street races on skis (pulled by horses!), a dazzling fireworks display, and kids’ events. It’s truly a sight to behold!
• MusicFest at Steamboat (January): A huge country music festival that draws big names and enthusiastic crowds.
• Cowboy Downhill (January): Professional rodeo cowboys swap their horses for skis in a wild race down the slopes. Hilarious and exciting!

Spring Awakening (May – June)

As the snow melts, the landscape transforms.

• Hiking & Biking: Trails start opening up, revealing stunning views and early wildflowers.
• Fishing: The rivers and streams come alive with excellent fly fishing opportunities. North Park, near Walden, is famous for its “Gold Medal” fishing waters.
• Wildlife Viewing: This is a great time to spot elk, deer, and other animals as they become more active.
